A CRITIQUE OF THE CONSTANT ELASTICITY OF TRANSFORMATION (CET) LINEAR SUPPLY SYSTEM AgEcon
Shumway, C. Richard; Powell, Alan A..
An elusive restriction maintained in earlier CET supply models with three or more products is shown to result in a potentially serious misspecification. Its impact on empirical estimates is found to be substantial, and an alternative formulation is presented which overcomes the problem while still maintaining the CET hypothesis.

A DESCRIPTIVE AND ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF RELATIONSHIPS IN THE RICE SUBSECTOR OF BURKINA FASO AgEcon
Hebie, Sekou.
As in almost all sub-Saharan African countries, agriculture plays an important role in the economic life of Burkina Faso. The World Bank's 1983 report indicates that agriculture's contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 41 percent in 1981 compared to 16 percent for the industrial sector. In 1980, exports of agricultural products (basically cotton, groundnuts, and livestock) accounted for 89 percent of total export earnings. The country is primarily agricultural, with nearly 90 percent of the population dependent on agriculture as a livelihood. Yet it is well known today that Burkina Faso, going into its third decade as a sovereign nation, is still facing, like its Sahelian counterparts, one of the biggest challenges of economic...

A DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS OF GRAIN MARKET STRUCTURE IN SELECTED STATES OF THE SOUTH AND CORNBELT AgEcon
Baldwin, E. Dean; Thraen, Cameron S.; Larson, Donald W..
Scherer's industrial organization model is modified to characterize the grain marketing system. The modified model identifies the important relationships between economic characteristics and the type of grain facilities found in three states; Alabama, Illinois, and Ohio. Multivariate linear discriminate analysis is used to identify the important basic supply, demand, and transportation variables within and among these states. It is concluded that the structural differences among selected grain marketing regions can be explained by regional differences in basic supply, demand, and transportation variables. The findings suggest that Scherer's industrial organization model can be adapted to explain the diverse structure of the grain marketing system in...

A FLEXIBLE METHOD FOR EMPIRICALLY ESTIMATING PROBABILITY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Taylor, C. Robert.
This paper presents a hyperbolic trigonometric (HT) transformation procedure for empirically estimating a cumulative probability distribution function (cdf), from which the probability density function (pdf) can be obtained by differentiation. Maximum likelihood (ML) is the appropriate estimation technique, but a particularly appealing feature of the HT transformation as opposed to other zero-one transformations is that the transformed cdf can be fitted with ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. Although OLS estimates are biased and inconsistent, they are usually very close to ML estimates; thus use of OLS estimates as starting values greatly facilitates use of numerical search procedures to obtain ML estimates. ML estimates have desirable asymptotic...

A generic reclassification of the Afrotropical Bolboceratini (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae) Naturalis
Krikken, J..
The generic classification of the Afrotropical Bolboceratini is discussed. Fourteen genera are recognized, five of them new: Bolboceratellus, Bolbodius, Bolboceratex, Namibiobolbus and Meridiobolbus. Microbolbus Vulcano et al. is synonymized with Mimobolbus Vulcano et al. Bolbaffroides and Bolboceratops are raised to generic rank. The genera are keyed, diagnosed, and their species are listed. Many new combinations are proposed, mainly for species hitherto combined with Bolboceras Kirby.

A laboratory model system for analysing microbial interactions occurring in anoxic estuarine sediments. ArchiMer
Herbert, R; Keith, S.
Defined mixed populations of Clostridium butyricum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Chromatium vinosum co-existed for long periods when grown in a single stage chemostat with glucose as sole carbon source. The nature and availability of the inorganic nitrogen source exerted a major effect on carbon flow in the experimental system. The data show that both the C. butyricum and D. desulfuricans isolates can utilise NO sub(3) as an e super(-)acceptor with an increase in cell yield. Under these growth conditions the free S super(2-) levels were lower resulting in more stable mixed populations. In addition the data show that the C. butyricum produces more oxidised fermentation end-products (acetate) when NO sub(3) super(-) was available and more reduced products...

A leaf anatomical contribution to the classification of the Linaceae complex Naturalis
Welzen, P.C. van; Baas, P..
The leaf anatomy of the Linaceae complex (Linaceae s.s., Hugoniaceae, Ixonanthaceae, Humiriaceae and Erythroxylaceae) and putative allies ( Ctenolophon, Lepidobotrys, Irvingiaceae) is surveyed, mostly on the basis of original observations (72 specimens, 27 genera), partly from data in the literature. Diversity in stomatal type, midrib and petiole vascularisation, sclerenchyma support, foliar sclereids, mucilage cells, secretory cavities, and cristarque cells provide evidence in favour of a separate family status of the members of the Linaceae complex. Allantospermum and Cyrillopsis are best accommodated in the Ixonanthaceae. Irvingiaceae (often treated in or near Simaroubaceae) show similarities with the Linaceae complex, albeit more closely to the...

A LINKED ANNUAL AND MONTHLY MODEL FOR FORECASTING ALFALFA HAY PRICES AgEcon
Blake, Martin J.; Clevenger, Tom.
This article develops a model to forecast monthly alfalfa hay prices before the first harvest. This is done by linking an annual model, which forecasts the initial May price, with a system of monthly equations that track the monthly seasonal price pattern, given the forecasted May price.

A MICROCOMPUTER LINEAR PROGRAMMING PACKAGE: AN ALTERNATIVE TO MAINFRAMES AgEcon
Laughlin, David H..
This paper presents the capabilities and limitations of a microcomputer linear programming package. The solution algorithm is a version of the revised simplex. Rapid problem entry, user ease of operation, sensitivity analyses on objective function and right hand sides are advantages. A problem size of 150 activities and 64 constraints can be solved in present form. Due to problem size, limitations and lack of parametric and integer programming routines, this package is thought to have the most value in teaching applications and research problems in the smaller size categories.
