As in almost all sub-Saharan African countries, agriculture plays an important role in the economic life of Burkina Faso. The World Bank's 1983 report indicates that agriculture's contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 41 percent in 1981 compared to 16 percent for the industrial sector. In 1980, exports of agricultural products (basically cotton, groundnuts, and livestock) accounted for 89 percent of total export earnings. The country is primarily agricultural, with nearly 90 percent of the population dependent on agriculture as a livelihood. Yet it is well known today that Burkina Faso, going into its third decade as a sovereign nation, is still facing, like its Sahelian counterparts, one of the biggest challenges of economic... |

Scherer's industrial organization model is modified to characterize the grain marketing system. The modified model identifies the important relationships between economic characteristics and the type of grain facilities found in three states; Alabama, Illinois, and Ohio. Multivariate linear discriminate analysis is used to identify the important basic supply, demand, and transportation variables within and among these states. It is concluded that the structural differences among selected grain marketing regions can be explained by regional differences in basic supply, demand, and transportation variables. The findings suggest that Scherer's industrial organization model can be adapted to explain the diverse structure of the grain marketing system in... |

This paper presents a hyperbolic trigonometric (HT) transformation procedure for empirically estimating a cumulative probability distribution function (cdf), from which the probability density function (pdf) can be obtained by differentiation. Maximum likelihood (ML) is the appropriate estimation technique, but a particularly appealing feature of the HT transformation as opposed to other zero-one transformations is that the transformed cdf can be fitted with ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. Although OLS estimates are biased and inconsistent, they are usually very close to ML estimates; thus use of OLS estimates as starting values greatly facilitates use of numerical search procedures to obtain ML estimates. ML estimates have desirable asymptotic... |

The leaf anatomy of the Linaceae complex (Linaceae s.s., Hugoniaceae, Ixonanthaceae, Humiriaceae and Erythroxylaceae) and putative allies ( Ctenolophon, Lepidobotrys, Irvingiaceae) is surveyed, mostly on the basis of original observations (72 specimens, 27 genera), partly from data in the literature. Diversity in stomatal type, midrib and petiole vascularisation, sclerenchyma support, foliar sclereids, mucilage cells, secretory cavities, and cristarque cells provide evidence in favour of a separate family status of the members of the Linaceae complex. Allantospermum and Cyrillopsis are best accommodated in the Ixonanthaceae. Irvingiaceae (often treated in or near Simaroubaceae) show similarities with the Linaceae complex, albeit more closely to the... |

This paper presents the capabilities and limitations of a microcomputer linear programming package. The solution algorithm is a version of the revised simplex. Rapid problem entry, user ease of operation, sensitivity analyses on objective function and right hand sides are advantages. A problem size of 150 activities and 64 constraints can be solved in present form. Due to problem size, limitations and lack of parametric and integer programming routines, this package is thought to have the most value in teaching applications and research problems in the smaller size categories. |
